A screened bottom board is a very important development in beekeeping equipment today that everyone should be using! The screened bottom board increases brood production, reduces Varroa mite counts, allows you to better monitor your Varroa infestation levels, and enables bees to excel over winter!
Here at Tennessee’s Honey Bees, we will close off the bottom of the Screened bottom boards in the colder months to help eliminate the draft so it is easier for the Honey Bees to keep the beehives warm. Do not close off all ventilation to the beehive as you still want to be able to eliminate and condensation or other moisture inside the beehive to assist in making it easier for the Honey Bees to maintain the temperature inside the hive.
Other times it may be beneficial to close the screened bottom board off is when you are re-queening a hive, starting a Nuc or installing a new package of honey bees.
The rest of the year leave it open
Here at Tennessee’s Honey Bees, we have begun to utilize more Advantech® in the majority of the Honey Beehive components and Nucs in the Tennessee’s Honey Bees apiaries.
